What the series is about

The Shards of Heaven series is a dark fantasy and supernatural thriller cycle by the British novelist M. L. Grant. It follows a single idea to its most frightening conclusion: that the barrier between heaven and earth was never permanent, and that when it fractures, it does not break evenly. What falls through is not salvation but something older, hungrier and far less forgiving.

The first book, Shards of Heaven: The Prophecies of Marrow Road, introduces a world where prophecy is not a comfort but a warning system nobody wants to hear. Ordinary lives collide with an order of angels whose motives are not benevolent, and the people left standing are the ones who learn that survival has a cost measured in who they are willing to become.

The cast is deliberately human. Callie, Emmy, Max and Alistair are not chosen heroes but witnesses and survivors, each carrying their own grief into a conflict far larger than any of them. Against them stands a divine hierarchy, embodied most visibly by Archangel Michael, whose certainty is as dangerous as any demon the series can produce.

Structurally the books favour dread over spectacle. Marrow Road is a place of rumours and half-kept promises; the divine is present mainly as pressure, signs and consequences. Grant writes in short, sharp chapters that keep the tension close to the ground, so that the supernatural never arrives as a surprise but as an inevitability the reader has been dreading for a hundred pages.

The second instalment, Shards of Heaven VII: A Righteous Massacre, arrives in 2026 and widens the frame, exploring what happens when those who believe themselves righteous stop asking whether their violence is justified. Anyone drawn to cosmic horror, theological thriller writing or the darker end of British fantasy will find the series built for them.

Characters and lore

The names, places and ideas that recur across the series, explained plainly.

CharacterCallieShards of Heaven: The Prophecies of Marrow Road

One of the central figures of the series: an ordinary young woman whose life is pulled apart by forces she never asked to meet. Callie's story anchors the human cost of the fracture between heaven and earth.

Main character; represents the reader's entry point into the supernatural conflict.

CharacterEmmyShards of Heaven: The Prophecies of Marrow Road

A companion in the series' core cast, bound to Callie by circumstance and loyalty rather than by prophecy. Emmy's presence keeps the story grounded in ordinary friendship while the world around it becomes unrecognisable.

Core cast member.

CharacterMaxShards of Heaven: The Prophecies of Marrow Road

One of the survivors drawn into the events of Marrow Road. Max is a figure of pragmatism in a story about belief, reacting to the impossible with suspicion rather than awe.

Core cast member.

CharacterAlistairShards of Heaven: The Prophecies of Marrow Road

A member of the cast who carries knowledge the others lack, and whose choices shape how far the story's characters are willing to go.

Core cast member.

FactionArchangel MichaelShards of Heaven: The Prophecies of Marrow Road

The most visible representative of the divine order in the series. Michael is not a comforting figure: he arrives with certainty, hierarchy and judgement, and his purposes are rarely aligned with the survival of the people caught beneath him.

Antagonistic divine authority; embodies the series' central question about righteous violence.

PlaceMarrow RoadShards of Heaven: The Prophecies of Marrow Road

The location at the heart of the first book's title. Marrow Road is less a street than a threshold: a place of rumour, prophecy and terrible consequence, where the boundary between the ordinary world and what lies beyond it is thinnest.

Appears in the subtitle of book one, The Prophecies of Marrow Road.

ConceptThe shards of heavenShards of Heaven: The Prophecies of Marrow Road

The series takes its name from its central image: heaven not as a distant, intact kingdom but as something fractured, its pieces falling into the world. Each shard carries weight, consequence and danger, and what touches them does not remain unchanged.

The organising metaphor of the entire series.

ConceptProphecyShards of Heaven: The Prophecies of Marrow Road

In Shards of Heaven, prophecy is not guidance but pressure. The prophecies of Marrow Road foretell events their subjects would rather not know about, and knowing them changes what people do, which is precisely the danger.

Central mechanism of the first book's plot.
